Made up of natural substances, herbal remedies are derived from plants. Throughout history the value of herbs has been acknowledged. Mentioned in the Bible is the fact of kings traveling vast distances to present Jesus with gifts in the form of myrrh and frankincense. The herbal medicine is referenced in the Bible, indeed. Said by Jesus in Ezekiel is “the fruit of the tree is for man’s meat, and the leaves for man’s medicine.”
Plants are affecting the body in many ways and these effects have been observed by science. The willow tree and its bark, in particular, is just an example. This bark used to be dipped in hot water in the past, just in the same way tea is prepared. The drink was able to lower fever and relieve pain. Later on it was discovered by scientists, that the plant’s bark includes substance known as salicin. Acetesalicylic acid is what was derived from it, nowadays famous under the name of “aspirin”. This home remedy, based on a tree bark, is a pain relieve product, known to be selling best.
Of course, the bark tree is not the only source of the herb remedies. Made from the roots of plants are, for example, the supplements Kava and Ginseng. The products Ginkgo Biloba are made from the leaves of the tree. Different other remedies derived from herbs are extracted from seeds, flowers, mushrooms, leaves, bark, cacti, etc.
The coffee beans (seeds of a tree) are ground to make coffee. Contained in the coffee is caffeine – a substance stimulating the body. From various dried plant leaves, tea is made, and it also contains caffeine. The leaves will help you remain alert and awake but should not be used when you strive to have a good sleep at night.
Medical properties have been ascribed to plants and herbs through the course of history. Good health is often the result of their use and this is acknowledged by the modern medical researchers of today. This fact leads to many herbs been used for producing medicines.
An example can be given with Foxglove. Some time ago it was believed that it relieves chest pain. Later it was discovered by researchers that digitalis is found in foxglove. Used widely by doctors, the medicine digitalis treats heart related illnesses.
Penicillin was produces by scientists by turning mold into a medicine. Peruvian cinchona tree’s bark helps body recover from malaria and the substance quinine sulfate is produced from it.
However, the fact that all plants and herbs are natural doesn’t necessarily mean they are good for you. A natural herb, for example, is the tobacco leaf. For soothing a cough, cigarettes were at some time advertised on TV as a good choice. This is obviously not true as the effect is just the opposite and it is known that tobacco causes cancer.
As a contrast, falsely have some plants been “accused” as detrimental for health when in fact they have proven their good properties. In America, for example, the early settlers were fearful of eating tomatoes and were on the opinion that they contain poison.
The studies conducted by scientists are the single known way for determining the way herbs affect us. Absurd are claims against plants that are not proven by scientists.
Some clues to herbs that may aid in health efforts are provided by history. For example, one of the ancient herbs in the history of men is Ginkgo biloba. Its fossils are dated back to millions of years ago and the Paleozoic era. For as long as five thousand years, in China, the leaves of the tree are used as an herb remedy, considered to be the most popular.
The Papyrus Ebers was left to us by the Egyptians and contains hieroglyphic writings referring to aloe vera and other such herbal remedies. The Ben Cao, the Chinese guide for herbs, is considered to contain records by Shen Nong- a Chinese emperor around 2000 B.C. The Ayurveda study in India is also dated back to 2000 B.C. The effects on health of over 500 plants are described by Discorides, a Greek doctor, in the De Materia medica record. In was first in Italy that the ingredients were in standardized dosages formulated.
The rain forest of Amazon is where a great number of herbs and plants, not known today, are found. The hope of scientists nowadays is that this location may indeed be the home of a number of herbal supplements from which new medicines may be produced.
The way herbs and plants may aid in our health efforts is today learned with each passing year by the modern science. As the Bible quotes: “the fruit of the tree is for man’s meat, and the leaves for man’s medicine.”
