Ever since the “magic” sex pills, such as Viagra were introduced to the market, women have felt a slight envious feeling of their male partners, who have used them to enhance their sexual experience. The truth is that pharmacists and scientists have been working on developing a female Viagra analogue for years now.
There have been various pills, and other substances introduced to the market and promoted as being the new female Viagra, but there still is not one single medicine, which can absolutely earn this title.
As with males, the arousal and orgasm in women is caused by the blood flow to the genital area. But the much more complex network of blood vessels in women, makes this blood flow harder and slower. The idea is to create a magic pill, which will improve that blood flow, increase the arousal, resolve the vaginal dryness, relax
the muscles in the genitalia and stimulate the orgasm.
But unfortunately, female sexual dysfunction is not as clear-cut as the male erectile dysfunction, and the types of problems women may have in this area are much more complex and unclear, the reasons for them and thus the treatment becomes more difficult.
The problems with sex in women can be physical, emotional, hormonal and even social and environmental. In many cases, periodically, women will have complaint such as lack of desire for sex, inability to enjoy sex and have orgasms, dryness, etc. Actually more than 40 percent of these women have had these problems at some point of their lives.
Because the reasons for them are often complex, the pills, ointments, substances, tools and treatments used to resolve these problems and increase sexual desire and improve the sexual experience in women vary a lot, and none of them has been proclaimed a universal Viagra substitute for women.
Vaginorm and other substances are based on DHEA and boost a steroid in the female body, which helps treat vaginal dryness and pain during intercourse, which often occurs during the menopause. Tests with these drugs have shown that about 70% of the women treated with it had improved sexual libido and sensation, and about 60 percent had an improvement on the dryness.
Other types of products are in the form of ointments, creams and gels, such as the Femptra clitoral cream or the LibiGel testosterone gel, created to increase sexual desire in women and improve sensation during sexual intercourse. Based on the male hormone, the LibiGel is applied to the woman’s shoulder and is absorbed by the skin. Since testosterone levels decrease during the menopause and with aging, this remedy has shown a nearly perfect result in the preliminary tests done. Flibanerin, another drug which has reportedly increased the sexual satisfaction in the women who have taken it immensely, is one which affects the serotonin levels as well as the other brain chemicals, and was originally introduced as a depression treatment pill. Some specialists recommend the use of medications based on magnesium, which plays an important role in transporting hormones such as insulin, thyroid, estrogen, testosterone, DHEA, etc.) as well as the neurotransmitters (dopamine, serotonin, etc.). Remedies, claiming to be the new female Viagra, such as magnesium oil are recommended as ointments for the female genitalia which largely improves the sexual performance and sensation.
The Intrinsa testosterone patch was also introduced to the market as a Viagra analogue for women, but this as many of the other hormonal pills for female sexual dysfunction was quickly rejected by the FDA as risky, because of studies showing that hormonal treatment in postmenopausal women was linked to an increase number of cases of heart attacks and breast cancer among patients, as well as other side effects.
Other scientists are working on producing a female Viagra sex pills based on estrogen. It could be years before they come upon an approved “magic pill” which can be proclaimed as the female Viagra.
