Hair Loss in Women

We’re used to hearing about men’s hair loss and hair loss products for balding men, but actually hair loss is not uncommon with women too. This is called androgenic alopecia, and is a condition, which affects both males and females. It is caused by a predominance of the male dihydrotestosterones (DHT) and testosterone in the human body. DHT is a testosterone derivative, and to put it in plain words, it is the enemy of the hair on a person’s head. It causes the hair follicles to shrink and die, and thus the hair to fall off permanently. A 5-alpha reductase enzyme in the body causes the testosterone to turn into DHT. It binds to the receptors of the hair follicles on the head and has a destructive effect on them.

This hormonal process becomes a problem more commonly in men, but every woman has certain minimum amounts of testosterone, which however if converted in DHT may cause hair loss problems. In women, even a minimum increase of testosterone levels may cause such a problem. And unfortunately, in some cases, even with normal testosterone and DHT levels, a women may suffer from androgenic alopecia if they are more sensitive to these hormones and chemicals.

The truth is, that hormones work best in a body when there is a good and delicate balance among them. A balance between the androgens (the male hormones) and the female hormones in a female boy is essential for the appropriate function of the body, and for avoiding such conditions as hair loss. This is why, when the levels of female hormones decrease, the male hormones, including DHT intensify their effects on the body causing various problems, including female hair loss.
Other causes of hair loss in women, can be other hormonal imbalances, such as thyroid hormones, as well as the hormonal changes during pregnancy, during certain illnesses and as a result of particular medications.

The human hormonal levels fluctuate and are cyclical, it is a fact that female hormones decline and sharply drop with the menopause, while in men, the testosterone decreases gradually after the age of 30.

The problem is, that there are not many medications available and readily prescribed to women with hair loss problems, because of the delicate hormonal balance, which when affected by certain hormonal therapies may improve the hair loss problem, but may tamper with other bodily functions. This is why, when the doctors find that it is actually the androgens affecting the hair on the female scalp, they will usually prescribe topical treatments, which are used directly on the head, rather than pills and medications.

The important part in treating androgenetic alopecia is to start with the treatment as early as possible, while the hair follicles are still there, and haven’t been destroyed by the DHT affecting them. Of course, it is also important to keep up with the treatment for as long as prescribed, because quitting may bring upon the negative effects back immediately.

When taking anti-androgen medications, the intake of vitamins and minerals is also essential for the effect of the treatment.
